Tape it up!

Vinay Sharma is a dynamic eighteen-year-old college going student, from a reputed educational institute in Bangalore. His only passion is tennis, which he has been playing from the age of ten. To convert this passion into his profession, Vinay is undergoing rigorous training to compete in the Under 19 state level championship. Unfortunately one day, during one of the practice sessions, Vinay fell down and hurt his right knee and shoulder.

After the X ray routine and consultation with his doctor, he was relieved to know that, there were no fractures during the fall. There was a ligament tear in his knee and inflammation and swelling on his shoulder. His doctor suggested that, he should consult a physiotherapist for strapping and taping of both the places, to heal faster. Vinay was sceptical to go ahead with the taping , as he feared that it would restrict his movements a lot and it requires few weeks of bed rest. But, when he walked into Anand Physiotherapy Centre, the whole concept was explained to him and how it is used in healing.

Taping is a method of application of a thin, stretchy, cotton-based therapeutic band that can heal variety of injuries and inflammatory conditions. It is almost identical to human skin in both thickness and elasticity, which allows it to be worn without binding or restriction of movement. It is commonly used by physiotherapists to relieve pain, improve joint stability, reduce injury recurrence and to prevent injury. The main aim of taping is to:

  • Stabilise or support the injury
  • Pain-relief via a de-loading of the vulnerable or painful structures
  • To facilitate normal movement, muscles or postural patterns.

There are different taping methods that can be used for problems with different body locations. The exact application of each technique may be different depending on the reasoning process of the person who applied the tape. Basically there are two techniques of taping:

  1. Rigid Taping: It is commonly used in strapping and is often referred to as “sports tape” or “athletic tape” and is most often a rigid style of strapping tape. The aims of rigid strapping tape include:
    • Injury prevention
    • Joint stabilization
    • Joint and ligament protection.

    Rigid Strapping Tape is recommended where an extra strong tape is necessary to support joints under extra-high stress. For his ligament tear,Vinay was suggested this type of taping, as a firm environment is required to heal. The extra strong adhesive in the tape will ensure that, it will remain in place during vigorous activities.

  2. Kinesiology Taping: It is an improved version of elastic sports tape that acts to dynamically assist the muscle function. It is used to relax overused muscles, facilitate underused muscles and has a lifting effect on the skin which can reduce swelling and inflammation by improving circulation and reducing pain. It comes in colourful patterns and most of the athletes today use this method of taping today. Kinesiology tape has a comprehensive array of therapeutic benefits too. Because it can be left on for up to a week, these therapeutic benefits are available to the injured area 24 hours a day, significantly accelerating the healing process from trauma, and inflammatory conditions.
