Some Great Contraceptive options for you

Contraception refers to choosing methods and techniques with the help of which you can avoid getting pregnant until you plan your pregnancy. It is very important to know about pros and cons of various birth control methods available to make the right choice.

The basic importance of choosing a contraceptive method is

Some Contraceptive options

Physical barrier:

This method is among the most widely used methods among teenagers or newly-wed couples. Physical barrier refers to the use of any agent that can prevent sperms or male semen from reaching female reproductive system or egg to avoid pregnancy. Physical barriers include condoms, spermicidal jellies (jells that contain chemical which kills the sperms within vagina, preventing the ascent of sperms towards egg) and vaginal diaphragms (female condoms).

  • It is an ideal birth control method for teenagers and men or women with multiple sex partners.

Negative aspects:

  • It does not provide 100% protection.
  • Some women develop infection to the material of condom or diaphragms.

Contraceptive pills:

This is perhaps one of the most common and widely used contraceptive methods, trusted by women all over the world. Contraceptive pills contain estrogen or progesterone or a combination of both (similar to normal female hormones) which are taken once daily for 21 days with 7 days gap to allow menstrual flow

Positive Aspects:

  • Convenient intake, once daily pill with 21 day medicine and 7 days placebo
  • Getting pregnant is easy, leave the pills and you get pregnant

Negative aspects:

  • Some women don’t like taking daily pills
  • Contraceptive pills are associated with weight gain, increase in thickening or concentration of blood leading to clot formation in veins.
  • Contraceptive pills do not give 100% contraceptive protection

Contraceptive implants or coils

This is convenient for women who cannot consume daily pills so they can get the contraceptive device implanted in the genital tract that release hormones a regular interval for 6 months or more.

Positive aspect:

  • Prolonged effect and no requirement of daily or weekly drug intake.

Negative aspects:

  • Associated with increased chances of developing pelvic inflammatory diseases/li>

Permanent contraception:

Permanent contraception is achieved by tubal ligation, a method that deals with abolishing the connection of tubes with the rest of reproductive system which renders a woman permanently sterile or incapable of being pregnant. This is a permanent contraceptive method and so is recommended for only:

  • Women who have completed their families
  • Women who never want to become pregnant because of emotional, psychological or medical issues.
  • As this is a permanent method of contraception, there is no issue regarding weight gain, increase risk of certain cancers (that is possible with hormonal contraceptive methods) and no risk of infection.
