Say bye to tobacco, and a hi to good health!
World no tobacco Day is usually observed on 31st may around the globe. The idea behind such a day is to encourage tobacco addicts to keep themselves away from all kinds of tobacco consumption for a day. Further, this day intends to create awareness about the widespread usage of tobacco and its harmful effect on one’s health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) created this day in 1987.
The WHO estimates that world witnesses about 6 million smokers die annually and around 0.6 non-smokers die due to passive smoking. The usage of tobacco affects some of our vital organs such as heart, liver and lungs.
It is a major risk factor for life threatening diseases such as heart attack, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer (lung, mouth and pancreatic). One of the major reasons for hypertension is tobacco consumption. The effect may vary from one person to another, depending on number of years and amount at which that person smoke/chew tobacco.
The earlier one starts smoking/chewing tobacco in life, the greater is its adverse effect on health. Apart from these, tobacco usage during pregnancy leads to premature birth, low birth weight, sudden infant death and miscarriages. Among men, the occurrence of erectile dysfunction is more common in smokers than nonsmokers.
Prevention And Cure
The adage “Prevention is better than cure” is applicable to tobacco addicts as well. Simply do not start to smoke/chew tobacco, as quitting gets more difficult. It is believed that parents play an important role in their child’s behaviour. Children of smoking parents are more likely to begin smoking, than nonsmoking households.
Nicotine Replacement Therapies
There are a few nicotine replacement therapies such as nicotine gums, spray, inhalers and transdermal nicotine patch that are used for smoking cessation. They help in relieving withdrawal symptoms, by producing less psychological alteration than in tobacco based system. By lowering the nicotine level, the users receive less pleasure from these therapies in comparison to tobacco. Hence, it makes it easy to gradually quit tobacco consumption. An added benefit is that, they neither contain carcinogens and gases that tobacco has. These products are sufficient to meet the needs of several tobacco users and are equally effective.
Although nicotine replacement is the most effective and preferred form of treatment, there are few medication available to help quit tobacco habit. Antidepressant pills are available to quit smoking, which primarily focus on that part of brain affected by nicotine. By easing the withdrawal symptoms and completely blocking the nicotine effect, antidepressant drugs help people to quit smoking/chewing tobacco.
This is another effective method to deal with tobacco addiction, as it uses the operant conditioning model. It is a reinforcement mechanism to modify undesired behavior. This method help individuals to understand high risk of smoking, provides alternative coping technique, stress management and many more. These intervention programs can be tailored to a person’s need, thus the success rate is greater than other forms of therapies.
Pulmonary Function Test
“Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) is a complete evaluation of the respiratory system including patient history, physical examinations, chest x-ray examinations, arterial blood gas analysis, and tests of pulmonary function. The primary purpose of pulmonary function testing is to identify the severity of pulmonary impairment. Pulmonary function testing has diagnostic and therapeutic roles and helps clinicians answer some general questions about patients with lung disease. PFTs are normally performed by a respiratory therapist,” said Wikipedia.org. Also you can avail this test at Anand Diagnostic Lab, Bangalore’s leading independent diagnostic laboratory.
