Four effective remedies for menstrual cramps

For most women, that special time of the month can bring a lot of agony, pain and discomfort due to menstrual cramps. These cramps can be agonising enough that it could force a lot of women to not actively undertake their usual daily routine, force them to stay on bed longer and keep low on their social and professional responsibilities for a couple of days. Before looking for remedies of menstrual cramps, it is important to know what causes menstrual cramps.

What causes Menstrual cramps in some women?

Menstrual cramps is the intense pain in the lower abdomen and the pelvic region that occurs a day or two before the actual menstrual cycle and persists for 3rd to 4th day of cycle, badly interfering with a woman’s regular life.

Each month, the uterus of a woman is preparing for a possible pregnancy; however if no pregnancy occurs, the uterus has to come back to its normal state for which it is necessary to get rid of all the preparations. If pregnancy does not occur, the supply of hormones is replenished and because of that the uterine lining sheds all that it has produced. This process of shedding is characterised as vaginal bleeding or menstrual cycle. Menstrual cramps are severe in the beginning of cycle due to passage of clots and tissues

What are risk factors for menstrual cramps?

  • Menstrual cramps are especially more intense in adolescents or in the first few cycles of a girl who recently achieved puberty.
  • Menstrual cramps are also severe in peri-menopausal period (when the woman is approaching menopause).
  • Cycles in which no ovulation occurs (seen in women on birth control pills)

Remedies for menstrual cramps:

Eat healthy: Maintaining a healthy diet is a pivotal importance in getting rid of menstrual cramps. Avoid sugar or starchy foods like rice and pasta, stay away from chocolates and other coca products and eat healthy.

Drink warm tea or milk: It is believed that tea or warm milk gives a soothing effect and effectively helps the passage of blood clots and tissue pieces.

Stress relieving Exercises: It may appear as one of the most difficult task to do but practice is the key. Don’t go for running and or other hardcore workout sessions, as stretching of muscles is all what you need. For this purpose, try the following:

  • Lie straight on floor or mat on your back and lift your legs in air, hold as long as you can and then bring down on floor. Repeat this 5 times, it takes only 5 minutes but will improve your functioning for coming 5 days.
  • To release your back pressure, lie by your side on Knee-Chest position (touching your knees to your chest) and stay in this position for 5 minutes.

Using herbal medications: Although you can get a number of medications to relieve your menstrual cramps, taking pain-killers is unnecessary, especially if you can use herbal teas and herbal medications that are free from side-effects.

Last but not the least, if simple remedies are not helping you and your menstrual cramps are associated with other menstrual complaints too, you must see your physician to rule out any other serious disease element.
