Acute cholecystitis

Acute Cholecystitis refers to sudden onset of severe abdominal pain which is caused by inflammation or infection of the lining of gall-bladder. There may be a number of causes that can lead to infection of gall-bladder, but the major cause that can lead to gall-bladder pain and infection is presence of stones. The pain due to acute Cholecystitis is in the upper right portion of body and trunk region. The first bout of pain due to acute Cholecystitis may not be very severe but if left untreated, the pain gets more and more severe with every passing episode. Initially this pain is very intermittent and often continues as being unnoticed. In these cases the only option left is surgery.

How can differentiate the pain of Cholecystitis from other sources of upper abdominal pain?

There may be a number of causes that may lead to upper abdominal pain, like liver issue, disorders of stomach and esophagus and of the bile tracts but a few features of Cholecystitis may help you in differentiating it from other causes of pain.

Initially the pain due to Cholecystitis is not felt in any localized area. Instead it is often felt in such an area which totally separate and it is called as the referred pain. The original location of this pain is in the upper right quadrant of the body. However the referred pain noticed in the initial stages of disease is felt in the shoulder region and upper back. Usually this pain gets stimulated by greasy and fried foods. In fact in many cases this pain is felt after eating foods like fried and fatty foods, pies, pastries and so on. In addition to having a pain in the upper right region of body, some people also experience conditions like nausea, vomiting, fever and diarrhea.

Symptom of Disease

Some severe symptoms of acute Cholecystitis include high fever, jaundice, shock and other complications. Further complications arise due to abscess information and rupture of gall bladder that may be a life threatening condition. All these symptoms appear at early or late stages of the disease. Several other complications are also associated with this disease. These include formation of gallstones. This happens in a situation when the gall bladder becomes perforated and forms a fistula like structure. This complication may further lead to the obstruction of small or large intestine.

Causes of Acute Cholecystitis

Acute Cholecystitis is caused by cholelithiasis. Cholelithiasis refers to the presence of choleliths or gallstones in the gallbladder. This ultimately blocks the cystic duct and causes secondary infection in the gut. Sometimes the gall bladder is also inflamed resulting in necrosis and irritation of bowel and diaphragm. The formation of gallstones is directly related to high intake of cholesterol; however in some cases, excessive breakdown of blood as a result of certain hemolytic anemia may be attributed as a major cause of gall-stones.

Tips to avoid pain of Cholecystitis:

In order to avoid an attack of Cholecystitis, you may have to follow these tips:
